The Disappearing Country: With 80% of the country less than one metre above sea level, the residents of the Maldives’ 1,200 tropical islands have long been aware of their vulnerability to rising sea levels. In 2008, it was announced that the government would start diverting a percentage of the nation’s income from tourism into a fund to buy a new homeland. The deep irony that the island nation’s economy relies heavily on tourists arriving in polluting aircraft has not been lost on the islanders. (Sakis Papadopoulos)

MIND-FUCK
Well people… Here’s the Mind Fuck of the Day (maybe this will become daily).
It’s the net of a Tesseract (a 4-D shape) forming from a net of cubes. And next to it cube forming from a net of squares.

Fire with Fire installation by Isabelle Hayeur…

Although it might look like it, this building isn’t actually on fire. The conflagration is a choreographed art installation by Isabelle Hayeur in Downtown Eastside, Vancouver. The fire is created  via video projectors and 3 blu-ray players. The effect, however, is completely realistic. Watch the video to see the ignition to all out 5 alarm. (via)

From the source site for the image above, Our Strange Planet:

Description: Between 10:50 and 11:25 PM, Central Daylight Savings Time, on July 19, 1978, the mobile UFO monitoring and recording laboratory and its three-person crew, were stopped on the north side of New Mexico Highway 380, which parallels the north edge of White Sands Proving Ground. The project’s instruments were set up and operating at around 31 miles east of north-south Interstate Highway 25, and about 42 highway miles out of Socorro, New Mexico. The three-member field crew and its instruments (including a recording ELF magnetometer, a recording gravimeter, a spectrographic camera, and a telephoto film camera, and two audio recorders) were watching, listening-to, and recording two deep-red UFOs shaped very much like the object that had landed at Socorro, New Mexico, just over 14 years earlier, on April 24, 1964… [MORE]

Book Building of the Day: As part of a local children’s book fair, Slovakian artist Matej Kren was invited by the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna to install a massive fortress composed of thousands upon thousands of books.
The piece — “Scanner” — is meant to evoke “a sensation of sublime terror, an alteration referring to a puzzling infinity itself created to destabilize conventional spatial habits.”
Uh… What he said.
